When a Book Club Member is Expecting

There are few things sweeter than celebrating a new chapter in the life of a friend. When someone in your book club is expecting, the whole hive feels the flutter. It is a tender season filled with anticipation, hope, and the pure magic of watching a family grow. A book club is already a circle of deep conversation and care, so leaning in to honor an expecting member feels like the most natural thing in the world. The real magic comes from the connection and community already forming around this new addition. Sharing experiences and offering meals, extra hands, and preparing a library for the future reader are all ways that we can wrap our arms around the expecting family!

  1. Sharing Experiences- women are great at this! Which swing worked well for their newborn, how to not yell at your spouse when you're on 3 hours sleep and the baby is up again, etc.
  2. Delivering meals to the overwhelmed new family is a way to gently ease the burden and make sure the caretakers feel cared for. Lots of folks do meal trains or prepare frozen meals to stash for a quick reheat. Me? I'm a fan of gifting an Uber Eats/Doordash gift card so the newly expanded family can choose what they prefer, have it hot and on-demand.
  3. Creating baby's first library is a genuine and thoughtful way to welcome a future reader into the world. This can be done as an activity during book club- no more than 10 minutes for each busy bee to gift a book and share why that one speaks to them. (My go-to baby books for friends are Clifford the Big Red Dog and Harold and the Purple Crayon, so as to prepare them for a life of being dog's best friend).
